🇯🇵 Japan eSIM

A MoMo Japan eSIM is a digital SIM that gives your phone mobile data in Japan without swapping your physical SIM card. You choose a plan, pay online with your card, and receive the eSIM by email together with a QR code to install it.

The eSIM connects to local mobile networks in Japan, so you can use maps, messaging apps and the internet from the moment you land. Plans include a fixed amount of data, or unlimited data, for a set number of days.

Free WiFi in Japan is improving, but it is still patchy in rented apartments, on regional trains and in smaller towns. With a data connection on your phone you can navigate, translate and stay reachable everywhere you have signal.

Japan eSIM plans

MoMo Japan eSIMs work nationwide, covering Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Hokkaido, Kyushu and Okinawa. The network types supported by each plan (for example 4G) are shown on the plan cards above.

Japan plans are being updated. Multi-country and global plans are available in the meantime.

Why use an eSIM in Japan?

  • Skip the SIM vending machines and kiosks at the airport: your eSIM is delivered to your email inbox right after payment and installs in a few minutes.
  • Avoid international roaming charges from your home carrier: the data comes from the plan you paid for, not from roaming.
  • Keep your home SIM active for calls and texts while the eSIM handles mobile data.
  • Pick a plan that matches your trip: small fixed-data plans for city breaks, or larger and unlimited plans for longer stays.

How much data do I need in Japan?

Light use

If you mainly use maps, messaging apps and occasional browsing, 1 to 3 GB for one to two weeks is usually enough.

Normal travel use

For daily social media, email, web browsing and navigation, a 5 to 10 GB plan for two weeks is a comfortable choice for most travelers.

Heavy use

If you stream video, upload photos regularly, or share your connection with a laptop, consider a 20 GB or larger plan, or an unlimited plan.
